The Government Legal Service (GLS) is looking for 2 or 3 volunteers to test a new written exercise for applicants who are applying for this year’s GLS Legal Trainee Scheme (we have around 35 Trainee Solicitor and Pupil Barrister posts available).
The written exercise itself will take about an hour. Once completed, participants will be required to evaluate the exercise.
The exercise tests candidates’ analytical ability, judgement and written and oral communication skills. It is designed with non-law students in mind since, typically, around 40% of the GLS’ graduate posts are awarded to candidates who have not studied law. Participating in this trial will provide valuable experience of the type of written questions used by graduate recruiters as part of their application and assessment processes.
The GLS is unable to provide any financial remuneration to participants. However, the GLS will arrange a visit for you to meet current GLS trainees and qualified lawyers.
Details are as follows:
Where?
The trial will be held at our assessment centre in central London.
When?
The trial will take place on either 1, 2 or 3 June.
Who?
Participants can be law or non-law students and can be at any stage of their academic career.
The exercise is designed with non-law students in mind. Prior knowledge of law is not required.
However, please note that any participants who are technically eligible to apply for a graduate post with the GLS this year (i.e. law students who are in or have completed their second year of study; non law students who are in their third year of study) will be precluded from applying for a graduate post with the GLS in the 2015 recruitment campaign. However, participants will be welcome to apply to the GLS in subsequent years.
What?
Participants will be provided with information relating to a fictitious scenario. Based on the information provided, participants will be required to provide some written advice to a senior work colleague who is asking for guidance on a number of points.
The exercise will take one hour. Following the exercise, participants will need to provide feedback on various aspects of the exercise and will be involved in a Q&A session with the authors of the written exercise.
